LED therapy

Skin improvement with LED therapy

LED therapy, also known as light therapy, is a non-invasive treatment that uses different wavelengths of light to improve the skin. LED stands for Light Emitting Diode and the therapy uses specific colours of light, such as red, blue, green and infrared. Each of these light colours offers unique benefits to the skin, making this method increasingly popular as a versatile and effective treatment without invasive procedures.

LED therapy works at the mitochondrial level and stimulates fibroblasts, leading to the production of collagen in the skin. It also promotes blood circulation and accelerates metabolism. In medical LED therapy, treatment is often combined with other skin-rejuvenating and skin-improving techniques for optimal results. A key example is photoactivation (PDT), which uses a source of red light with a wavelength of 630 nm. At I Care Clinic, we work precisely with this 630 nm LED technology for effective and targeted results.

Everything you need to know about LED therapy

Who is medical LED therapy for?

LED therapy is suitable for a wide rangeof skin types and skin conditions. It can be used effectively to treat acne, fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, redness and signs of overall skin ageing. This therapy is also ideal for people with sensitive skin or those who prefer not to undergo aggressive treatments. The treatment is permitted in Belgium from the age of 18.

How can LED therapy be applied?

• Pre-treatment: LED therapy can be used before a peel or laser treatment to improve the effectiveness of the treatments and reduce recovery time.
• Post-treatment one week after a peeling or laser treatment, LED therapy can be used to support the skin's recovery process.
• PDT (Photo Activation): LED light activates ingredients specifically designed for red light with a wavelength of 630 nm, which gradually improves the structure of the skin.
• Treatment for irritation and repair: as a stand-alone treatment, LED therapy can be applied 2-3 times a week to soothe and help repair the skin.

What does the skin-enhancing LED treatment involve?

During an LED therapy session, the patient lies comfortably under a device that emits light at a specific wavelength tailored to the skin condition being treated. The treatment is completely painless and relaxing. A session usually lasts between 15 and 30 minutes, depending on the patient's needs and the practitioner's advice.

Advantages and disadvantages of LED therapy

BENEFITS:

• Non-invasive: no needles or incisions are needed, meaning there is no recovery period.
• Painless: the treatment is completely painless, ensuring patient comfort.
• Versatility: suitable for treating various skin problems such as acne, wrinkles and pigmentation.
• Cell repair: stimulates the natural repair of skin cells and promotes collagen production.

DISADVANTAGES:

• Multiple sessions required: multiple treatments are often required for optimal results.
• Limited effectiveness for severe skin problems: possibly less effective compared to invasive treatments for severe skin problems.
Although LED therapy is generally considered safe, some risks and side effects may occur:
• Irritation: some people may experience temporary redness or mild irritation after treatment.
• Eye damage: exposure to bright light can be harmful to the eyes, so it is essential to wear protective eyewear during the session.
• Allergic reactions: in rare cases, allergic reactions may occur, especially when light-sensitive substances are used in combination with the therapy.
